If you run a satellite or space startup, you probably know ESA, Horizon Europe, and maybe your national space agency. But there are at least three more EU funding sources that most space founders never discover. Combined, they represent billions in available funding.
European Defence Fund: the one nobody checks
The EDF funds space technology for critical applications. Resilient satellite communications, earth observation for border and maritime monitoring, space situational awareness, and in-orbit servicing. If your satellite technology has any application beyond commercial broadband, EDF grants cover 100% of R&D costs. Up to €5M for SME-led projects.
IRIS²: the €6B constellation
The EU is building its own sovereign satellite constellation called IRIS². Budget: €6B. It will provide secure government communications and broadband connectivity. The prime contractors are selected, but the supply chain is still being assembled. Startups can participate as technology providers for ground segments, terminals, cybersecurity, and applications.
CASSINI: the space startup fund
The CASSINI initiative combines EU grants, equity investment, and business acceleration specifically for space startups. It includes seed funding, matchmaking with ESA and EU programmes, and access to the broader European space ecosystem. Less well-known than ESA's InCubed but often more accessible for early-stage companies.
Stacking space funding
A typical path: ESA or Horizon Europe funding for technology development. EDF funding to adapt for critical communications applications. IRIS² procurement to supply components for the constellation. CASSINI for business development support. Four programmes that connect into a funded pipeline from technology to revenue.
EDF space calls open April 2026. IRIS² procurement timelines are rolling. Start mapping your options today.
