Every autonomous drone needs LiDAR. Every high-bandwidth network needs photonic interconnects. Every advanced sensor system uses laser sources or optical detectors. Photonics is the hidden layer inside almost every critical technology the EU is trying to build. And there aren't enough European suppliers.
Where the demand is coming from
- Autonomous systems: LiDAR modules for navigation, targeting, mapping
- Telecommunications: photonic integrated circuits for 5G/6G and data centres
- Quantum communications: single-photon detectors, entangled photon sources
- Sensing: spectroscopy, gas detection, medical imaging
- Secure communications: free-space optical links for satellite and tactical networks
Each of these sectors is growing independently. Together, they create compound demand that European photonics companies can't yet fully serve.
The sovereignty advantage
Photonics components in critical systems must meet supply chain sovereignty requirements. European integrators building EU-funded platforms need European photonics suppliers. This isn't optional. Procurement rules specify minimum European content. If you manufacture photonics components in Europe, you have guaranteed demand from every EU-funded critical system project.
What integrators are looking for
Reliable supply (not prototypes, production-ready components). European manufacturing or at minimum European design with trusted fabrication. Technical support in European time zones. Willingness to customise for specific system requirements.
Small photonics companies that meet these criteria become preferred suppliers quickly, because the pool of qualified European vendors is small relative to demand.
How to position
Join an EU-funded project to demonstrate your components in a system-level context. This gives integrators confidence that your photonics work outside the lab. Once proven in a funded project, procurement contracts follow. The cycle from first project to recurring supply takes 12 to 18 months.
