The funding landscape for energy companies
European Defence Fund: has a dedicated call for high-performance energy systems (HPES). Covers next-gen batteries for EVs and forward operating bases, portable power for field operations, and fuel cell systems for silent mobility. 100% funded, up to €5M for SME-led projects. Your solid-state battery designed for EVs is the same technology they need for silent vehicles and remote power.
Batteries Europe Partnership: dedicated EU initiative for battery R&D and manufacturing. Covers cell chemistry, manufacturing processes, recycling, and second-life applications. Works alongside the EU Battery Regulation.
Clean Hydrogen JU: €1B+ for hydrogen and fuel cell technology. If you build fuel cells, electrolysers, or hydrogen storage, this is your primary programme.
Horizon Europe Cluster 5: funds energy R&D broadly, including storage, grid integration, and novel energy concepts. €500K to €4M.
EIC Accelerator: funds scaling of energy products. Now supports dual-use. Good for battery and fuel cell companies approaching production.
Why energy is dual-use by nature
A battery that powers an electric truck uses identical chemistry to one that powers an unmanned ground vehicle. A fuel cell designed for backup power works the same way in a remote communications station. Energy storage is inherently dual-use because the physics doesn't care about the application.
This makes energy companies eligible for the broadest range of EU funding. Civilian, dual-use, and dedicated energy programmes all apply. Check which combination fits your technology.
