Europe builds some of the world's best aircraft. But look inside the supply chain and you'll find critical dependencies on non-European components: engines, avionics modules, specialty materials, and software. The EU is spending billions to fix that, and the supply chain is being rebuilt right now.
Why the supply chain is opening up
Three forces are reshaping European aerospace. First, decarbonisation requires entirely new propulsion systems that incumbent suppliers don't have. Second, unmanned aviation is growing faster than established primes can serve. Third, sovereignty requirements are pushing buyers toward European suppliers for critical components.
Each of these creates openings for startups with the right technology.
Where startups fit
- Electric and hybrid propulsion: motors, power electronics, battery management for eVTOL and unmanned aircraft
- Advanced materials: lightweight composites, thermal protection, additive manufactured components
- Avionics: flight controllers, sensor fusion, communication systems for autonomous platforms
- MRO technology: predictive maintenance, digital twins, automated inspection for aircraft fleets
- Sustainable aviation: hydrogen storage, SAF compatibility, efficiency optimisation
The path from startup to supplier
Aerospace supply chains have high entry barriers: certification, qualification testing, and long sales cycles. But EU-funded projects shortcut this process. When you demonstrate your component in a Clean Aviation or EDF project, you get tested, certified, and introduced to the integrators who will buy from you. The project pays for the qualification that would otherwise take years and cost millions.
Timing
Next-generation European aircraft programmes are in their component selection phase. Urban air mobility, medium-altitude long-endurance unmanned systems, and sustainable short-haul aircraft are all choosing suppliers now. Companies that join funded projects in 2026-2027 will be the ones supplying production in 2029-2030.
